Interesting fact: Only 20% of diamonds that are mined are
good enough to use.
Most people don't know this but it's not the diamond it
self that makes it sparkle, it's the cut of the diamond. A
master diamond cutter determines the best cut for each
diamond. A cut that makes the best use of light to give the
diamond its twinkle and shine.
In a white diamond, the absence of color is important. The
lesser the color, the more valuable. If a diamond has full
color, like a blue diamond or a yellow diamond, it is worth
thousands more than a white diamond.
Carat weight is self-explanitory. The more the diamond
weights, the more it is worth.
Clarity of diamonds is defined on the amount of blemishes
with the stone. The blemished happen in nature. Blemishes
will have some effect on sparkle.
The cut of diamond has the greatest affect on its
brilliance and sparkle. A poor cut can make a diamonds look
dull and muddy no matter high the color, carat or clarity
rating.
Unfortunately there are other things that make a diamond
loose it's luster.
Grease and oil. Diamonds easily attract oils and grease
from your fingers. Build up of this grim will make your
diamonds appear dirty and dull. This is why you should only
handle your diamonds when needed.
It's easier to remove grease than to fix a bad cut.
Here's how you remove grease and oil. Let your diamonds
soak in an ammonia based cleaner overnight. You can also
find diamond cleaner at your local jeweler.
Pay attention to the metal and or settings surrounding your
diamonds. They may be more fragile and will require extra
care when cleaning.
Encrusted dirt on diamonds can be removed using an
ultrasonic cleaner. This cleaner uses ultrasonic waves to
remove the dirt. It can also loosen the stones. Let a
professional jeweler clean your diamonds with this method.
The jeweler will inspect any mountings and tighten them if
necessary
Using these methods you can keep your diamonds long-lasting
with extra shine. Which is why we have them in the first
place.
